The bigger the home, the more a hydronic system depends on decisions made at drawing stage. In a multi-level Toorak residence the heat source is the easy part. What makes or breaks comfort is where the plant lives, how the house is split into zones, and whether the emitters chosen for each room can actually heat it at heat-pump water temperatures.
A whole-home system needs more than a heat pump. There is a buffer tank, circulating pumps, a manifold for each level and often a hot water cylinder, plus room to service all of it. We ask for a dedicated, ventilated space in the basement or garage with a clear pipe route to the outdoor unit. That unit needs free airflow and a position away from bedrooms and neighbouring windows; on a large block, a side setback or a screened roof area usually works.
Zone by how rooms are used. Formal living and dining rooms used a few evenings a month shouldn't run on the same schedule as the family kitchen. Guest suites, a home office, a gym and the main bedroom each get their own zone; wine cellars and plant rooms get none. Double-height voids and open stairwells carry warm air upstairs, so upper-level zones often need less output than their floor area suggests. Everything runs on MAXA smart controls, so the whole house can be managed from one app rather than a wall of separate thermostats.
Designer radiators that perform. Sculptural pieces from IMAS and De'Longhi look superb, but some designs give out less heat for their size than a plain panel, especially at the lower water temperatures that keep a heat pump efficient. We check every chosen model against its room's heat loss before it is ordered, and tell you early if a feature piece needs a larger size or a partner panel elsewhere in the room.
