Hydronic Radiators — De'Longhi & IMAS

The output printed in a radiator catalogue is measured at a standard test condition, with water much hotter than a heat pump supplies. Run that same panel at the 45–55 °C a heat pump prefers and it delivers noticeably less heat. That gap is the most common reason we are called to homes where new hydronic radiators never quite warm the room: the panels were picked from the catalogue figure, not the real flow temperature.

What goes into our radiator schedule

• Room-by-room heat loss, including glazing, ceiling height and exposed walls, so each room gets its own output target.
• The right panel depth. Single, double and triple-convector panels of the same height and length give very different outputs. Going deeper is often the neat way to hit a low-temperature target without a wider panel.
• Placement. Under a window is still the best spot, because the panel counters the cold downdraught off the glass. Long curtains or a couch pushed against the radiator can cut its output.
• Bathrooms. A towel rail often cannot heat a large bathroom alone, so we check whether it needs help from a second panel or underfloor.
• Valves. Each radiator gets a thermostatic valve and a lockshield that we set at commissioning, so panels nearest the heat source do not steal flow from the far end of the house.
