Hydronic Heating Blue Mountains — cold-climate underfloor & radiators.

Blue Mountains hydronic heating specialists since 1998. Cold-climate-spec hydronic underfloor and slab heating, European panel radiators, air-source heat pumps with frost-resilient ratings, and condensing gas hydronic boilers — installed across Katoomba, Leura, Blackheath, Mt Victoria and the Lower Mountains.

About AHHAC Blue Mountains

Blue Mountains's hydronic heating, cooling & hot water specialists.

AHHAC has been installing hydronic heating in the Blue Mountains since 1998 — across heritage Federation guesthouses in Katoomba and Leura, weatherboard cottages in Blackheath, modern architect-designed builds at Wentworth Falls and Mount Victoria, plus the Lower Mountains commuter belt from Springwood to Glenbrook. Our Sydney showroom in Punchbowl is the dispatch point for all Blue Mountains crews, with a direct line on 1300 76 53 39.

The Upper Blue Mountains (Katoomba, Leura, Wentworth Falls, Blackheath, Mt Victoria) sit at 800-1100 m altitude with winter design temperatures of -4°C to -6°C — colder than central Canberra and one of the most demanding hydronic-heating climates in NSW. This makes hydronic heating the standard spec for any quality Blue Mountains build: in-slab hydronic underfloor heating for new builds, European panel radiators for the area's many heritage timber cottages.

For Upper Blue Mountains sites we specify cold-climate-rated equipment: Maxa R290 heat pumps rated for -25°C ambient operation, or the Immergas Magis Hercules Pro hybrid that switches automatically between heat pump and gas backup based on outdoor temperature. We add the alpine-spec insulation upgrade on hydronic distribution piping (25mm closed-cell) to maintain efficiency through frost weeks.

Why Blue Mountains homes choose AHHAC

The Blue Mountains has only a handful of dedicated hydronic installers, and most are general renovation plumbers. AHHAC brings our full Sydney design-and-install crews up the mountain — same engineering rigour, same European parts inventory, same dedicated service team as our Sydney metro installs. The drive from Punchbowl to Katoomba is 90-100 minutes, and we route same-day for urgent issues.

We're authorised installers for Maxa, Immergas Magis, Viessmann and Sime. For Blue Mountains heritage timber-cottage installs (Federation guesthouses, weatherboard miners' cottages) we often specify the ThermaSkirt aluminium skirting heating — heritage-friendly, no slab work, no visible radiators.

For Blue Mountains rural and acreage sites without gas connections, we specify hydronic wood and pellet burners with back-boiler integration — warm one room visually AND drive whole-home hydronic heating. Off-grid friendly, ideal for the Mountains' lifestyle properties.

Common Blue Mountains questions

Hydronic heating in Blue Mountains — FAQ

How cold does it get in the Upper Blue Mountains?+
Winter design temperatures for Katoomba, Leura, Blackheath and Mt Victoria sit around -4°C to -6°C, with average winter daytime maximums of 8-10°C and frequent overnight frosts from May through September. Mt Wilson and Mt Irvine regularly hit -8°C. Snow is common in July and August. The Upper Mountains are one of the most demanding residential hydronic climates in NSW — comparable to Canberra and the Southern Highlands.
Why hydronic heating instead of ducted in the Blue Mountains?+
Ducted reverse-cycle struggles to maintain capacity below 0°C ambient, and the heated air doesn't penetrate the high thermal mass of older Blue Mountains weatherboard and Federation homes. Hydronic underfloor and radiators radiate warmth from solid surfaces, giving even temperature and silent operation. Running cost is 25-40% lower than ducted over a Blue Mountains winter, more if paired with rooftop solar PV.
How much does hydronic heating cost in the Blue Mountains?+
Blue Mountains installs typically run 10-15% higher than Sydney metro for the same floor area because of cold-climate-spec insulation, heavier-duty heat pumps and travel time. A 200 m² Upper Mountains home with hydronic underfloor + heat pump + hybrid gas backup typically costs $42,000-$68,000 installed. Lower Mountains (Springwood to Glenbrook) prices are closer to Sydney metro. Free site visit and fixed quote within 24 hours.
Do you install hydronic in heritage Blue Mountains cottages?+
Yes — heritage Federation timber cottages and weatherboard guesthouses are some of our most common Blue Mountains projects. We typically specify hydronic radiators or ThermaSkirt skirting heating (no slab work, no visible radiators on walls) driven from a small wall-hung condensing boiler in a service cupboard. Heritage approvals are straightforward — the install is invisible from the street and reversible.
Do heat pumps work in Blue Mountains winters?+
Yes — but only the right ones. The Maxa i-290 R290 monoblock is rated for -25°C ambient and maintains its full heating capacity down to -7°C. For sites that sit below -5°C for sustained periods (Mt Wilson, Megalong Valley, parts of Blackheath) we typically spec the Immergas Magis Hercules Pro hybrid that switches to gas automatically when the heat pump COP drops below economic. Standard residential-grade heat pumps designed for Sydney metro will struggle in the Upper Mountains.
Can you service my Blue Mountains hydronic system?+
Yes — AHHAC's Sydney service team handles annual servicing, repairs and priority call-outs for all Blue Mountains hydronic systems. We service every major brand (Maxa, Immergas, Viessmann, Bosch, Vaillant, Worcester, Rinnai, Rheem) plus older Stiebel Eltron and Daikin Altherma installs. Annual service contracts maintain manufacturer warranty validity. Call 1300 76 53 39.
