Most Vitocal 161-A installs we do are replacements rather than new builds: an old electric or gas storage tank is failing and the household wants something cheaper to run. The swap is straightforward, but a heat pump water heater behaves differently from a tank with an element or burner, so a little planning goes a long way.
Choosing 200 L or 270 L. A heat pump reheats more gently than an element, so we size for your morning and evening peaks, not just the number of people. Back-to-back showers, a large bath or teenagers usually push a family to 270 L, while a couple or small household is typically well served by 200 L. If in doubt, we ask how often your current tank runs out.
Running it cheaply. The built-in Wi-Fi timer is the biggest lever. With rooftop solar, scheduling the heat pump to run in the middle of the day means much of your hot water is heated by your own generation. Even without solar, steering clear of peak-tariff periods helps. We set the schedule and operating mode with you in the Vitocal Home Control app before we leave.
Who it doesn't suit: the 161-A makes domestic hot water only.
