Brisbane flips the usual hydronic brief. In Melbourne or Canberra a system is designed around the coldest morning; here it is designed around the stickiest February afternoon, and winter warmth is the easy part. That changes how we approach each type of Brisbane home.
A chilled floor can only run so cold before it reaches the dew point and starts to sweat, so underfloor cooling on its own controls temperature but removes little moisture. Fan coils pull moisture out of the air and drain it away, which is why most Brisbane designs combine the two, with controls that watch the dew point and adjust water temperature to suit. Every chilled-water pipe also gets vapour-sealed insulation, because an unsealed pipe in a humid roof space will drip all summer. Dripping pipework and missing condensate drains are among the most common faults we are called in to fix.
Two other local points. On sites within about 5 km of the coast, the outdoor unit gets our anti-corrosion treatment as standard. And the best time to install is winter or early spring: book then and the system is commissioned and balanced before the humidity arrives, rather than competing for install dates once summer has started.
